Plaza Marcela turns 23

A discount store considered as one of the foremost modern shopping centers in the city, Plaza Marcela marks another milestone last April 19, celebrating twenty-three years of retail success.

Plaza Marcela opened its door to the public in 1997 as a new landmark in the once desolated Cogon District this city, giving a new feel to the shopping lifestyle of the Boholanos.

Store manager Danny Torreon said after more than two decades of dedicated service to the Boholanos, Plaza Marcela continues to serve more standing the test of times, with the top management so grateful to all its valued customers for the constant patronage through the years.

“We celebrate the 23rd Anniversary of Plaza Marcela sans the fanfare, especially we are in the midst of health crisis due to the CoViD-19 pandemic. We just want to express our profound gratitude to our dear customers from its inception until now,” Mr. Torreon added.

After the store opening, Plaza Marcela immediately expanded with the addition of its Home & Fashion Department seven months later in November 29, 1997, featuring a wide variety of popular and finest brands in fashion. At that time, it has an escalator reportedly the longest one outside Metro Manila.

In December 15, 2000, Plaza Marcela unveiled its spacious and comfortable 3rd Level housing the Household and Kitchenwares sections, Appliance Center, Furniture Section and the Flowershop for great home enhancement. The following year in May 15, a school and office supplies section, SOD, was added to the store.

Then, Boholanos first experienced the langhap-sarap goodness with the opening of the first ever Jollibee and Greenwich outlets in Bohol at Plaza Marcela in April 22, 1999.

Also, long before Island City Mall brought the entertainment scene here to the next level, with big artists and popular bands from Manila performing at the Activity Center and carpark, Plaza Marcela had already its wholesome celebrity-laden events to the public before, with shows featuring the likes of Piolo Pascual, Kristine Hermosa, Jericho Rosales, Ruffa Mae Quinto, and more; not to mention the concert of South Border held during the 2nd anniversary of Plaza Marcela in 1999.

Taking the helm of the store is the most eligible bachelor, a very diligent and dynamic manager, Mr. Danny Torreon, who was once quoted as saying, “Plaza Marcela really changed the many aspects of Cogon District, boosted its economy and eventually help redefined the progress of Tagbilaran City.”

Now, with the community quarantine extended until April 30, there are no events, promos and other activities for this year’s store anniversary celebration. Plaza Marcela just serves its customers by opening its Supermarket, Freshmarket, Medicine+ pharmacy, Home Meals, and Fixtrite from 8 AM to 6 PM, and Jollibee from 8 AM to 7 PM.
